Exercise without Injury

First, let me get the legal stuff out of the way:  Always consult your doctor before starting an exercise plan. I am not a medical professional and I am only sharing with you what has worked for me!

I want to talk about starting to exercise and avoid injuries.  Injuries can happen to the most experienced and dedicated athlete but most likely they will happen to those that are just beginning and are not used to doing exercise.

Here are some things that will help reduce injuries:

  1. Stretch before starting your routine.
  2. If you are doing weights, move slowly and methodically.  No sudden jerky movements.
  3. Don't over do it. Start easy and increase the weight or repetitions as you progress.
  4. Be consistent.  If you stop your regular routine, don't expect to come back to it at full strength.
  5. Consider hiring a professional trainer for the beginning of your exercise journey.
Here are a few garments that might also help you reduce injury:

I use a compression brace that supports my back for my sciatica pain. The one I use is from Body Mate and was sent to me to test. Can you STOP overeating? And can how do BEAUTY treatments help?

How can a facial help you stop overeating?  Well, there is a connection.  But before I get to that, let me tell you that it isn't easy to stop overeating. There was a time that I just didn't understand why I couldn't stop eating and just get on that diet the doctor handed me. It was a simple meal plan. Everything I had to eat was written down.  If it was so simple then why couldn't I stick to it?
It took a while before I realized I was using food to feel better.  Some people bit their nails, others twirled their hair, others paced; I ate.  Eating made me feel good about myself and my events in my life. Eating comforted me.  If I was tired or stressed I ate and felt soothed.  I was not applying real life tools to deal with my feelings. I was applying a band-aide to my feelings. That band-aide was food. I developed the habit of using food, or better yet the strategy of using food to deal with life and it became so ingrained in me that it was hard to even realize I was doing it. It became a "knee-jerk" reaction. When my emotions were over stimulated I turned to food.

I needed to "untangle" the complicated web I had made with food and my emotions. I needed to focus on my emotions with my heart and head. And I needed to "devote" action to my weight and health. 

My health had to be my solitary devotion in order to break the habit of using food as a "feel good" solution. This included my emotional health as well as my physical health.  I always realized that as much as I was obsessed with eating (compulsive eating, emotional eating, etc) I had to have the same obsession over staying fit and processing my emotions on a separate plane that had nothing to do with food. By doing this I could choose fitness/health over comfort-eating and I could choose addressing and resolving my feelings over comfort-eating as well.

I found many ways to address my feelings.  One of the more curious ways was to care for myself on what others might find a frivolous level. I found that going to the gym, getting massages, getting facials, manicures, and pedicures actually helped relieve stress and increased a sense of calm.

Why are YOU Fat?

Well, of course I would never ask something this question, nor should you. But we most certainly can ask ourselves this question. After all, isn't the question of being fat or being skinny pretty much a simple one? If you are fat you eat too much. If you are skinny you aren't eating enough. For the most part, that's all there is too it.
There are many excuses tossed around for being overweight. One is, "I am not this fat, I have a large frame." Another is, "My metabolism is really slow." Well, while a person's body frame will determine their silhouette, it does not determine how much fat is on your body. A person can be large framed and trim. As far as being overweight due to metabolism, if your metabolism is causing you to be overweight, you might need to be under doctor supervision to get it under control but a proper diet may also be able to balance out a sluggish metabolism with the proper weight. Medical factors contribute to being overweight and being overweight also contribute to medical conditions.
Yes, there are many factors that can contribute to being overweight. These include environment, genetics, and medical conditions. Some of the contributing factors cannot be eliminated. But the good news is that most of the conditions can be treated and so can being overweight. I will address these real factors in another article but here lets talk about being overweight without having any contributing medical condition. Why are we FAT? What if you know you eat too much and can't stop?
Perhaps an unhealthy relationship with food is the cause. Some people eat when they are tired, lonely, bored, anxious, depressed, etc. That is emotional eating. It has nothing to do with hunger.
Are YOU this person?
Ask yourself these questions, and if you answered yes, you might have an unhealthy relationship with food:
  • Feeling guilty about eating
  • Going on eating binges
  • Eating without thought - you eat an entire bag of potato chips and only realize you've eaten the entire bag when you have no more left.
  • Eating often and fast
  • Feeling guilty after eating
  • Hiding the food you eat or secret eating
There is still hope if you feel you relate to the questions above. You don't have to give up. There are many organization that can help you overcome your unhealthy relationship with food. There are also many clinicians that can provide you with counseling. Perhaps you also need a nutritionist to help you get back a healthy perspective on a nutritional plan that is best for you.
The best thing to do is start! The worse thing to do is to keep doing what you are doing now: feed an unhealthy relationship with food.
